Position Description:

The Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is responsible for providing instruction to resource level Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, consultation to students’ regular education teacher and other applicable school personnel order to maximize educational services and learning potential of hearing-impaired students.

Scope of Responsibility:

• Provides IEP directed educational services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
• Participates in the development of IEPs.
• Facilitates services and identify needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the general education setting.
• Requests materials and auditory equipment suitable for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
• Maintains regular contact with regular classroom teachers to help in preparation of teaching materials and tests.
• Provides in-service training to all regular school personnel so that Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are positively received in the school.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Director of Speech and Hearing Services.

Skills and Qualifications:

We seek detail-oriented, independent self-starters who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to raising student achievement and who have a record of high performance in challenging situations. Successful candidates will also demonstrate and/or possess:

• Bachelor's degree required and Louisiana teacher's certification in the area of Hearing
• Three+ years of experience in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the general education setting.
• Possess the ability to trouble shoot equipment specifically designed for hearing impaired students, which can include hearing aids, cochlear implants, sound field equipment, and assistive listening devices.
• Basic proficiency in sign language.
• Strong written and oral communication skills in multiple settings and have the ability to be an engaging change agent and culture-creator that can inspire and motivate.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
• Working knowledge of federal and state laws, policies and regulations relevant to students.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and skilled in Google Suite.
• Working knowledge telehealth platforms and experience in providing virtual teaching services.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other professionals to obtain positive solutions.
• Explicit knowledge of evidenced based practices.
• High degree of professionalism, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.

• Advanced Degree

Physical Involvement:

Sitting is a required part of each workday. Must be able to operate office equipment. Standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting up to 10 pounds is sometimes required. Ability to provide own transportation to schools, work locations and meeting sites. Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.
