Title:Principal

Reports to:Special Education Director

Annual Employment Period:45 Weeks, Full Time

Salary Range:$64,000 - $67,000, commensurate with background and experience

Qualifications:

  • Approval as a Director of Special Education or eligible for approval
  • Master's degree or higher, preferably Educational Leadership or currently enrolled in a program working on an Educational Leadership degree.
  • At least five years successful experience as a classroom teacher in special education.
  • Experience in working with students in a center-based program with Cognitive Impairments and/or Emotional Impairments preferred.
  • PLC Training preferred
  • Technology experience preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Performance Responsibilities (Non-prioritized):

  • Performs as a Team Member of District Administration

  • Participates in administrative staff meetings and performs assigned tasks.
  • Interprets and implements Board policies, administrative rules and procedures.
  • Communicates and coordinates with appropriate personnel issues related to administration, personnel, instruction, school-community relations, operations, equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares such reports as may be required by the district and state.
  • Performs as a Leader at the Building Level

  • Oversees the Building School Improvement Process and the Accreditation Process as well as other state or federal mandates or reports.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school's curriculum and programs.
  • Assists in the in-service orientation and training of teachers.
  • Supports and helps organize school involvement activities for teachers, students, and parents.
  • Communicates with parents, school/community groups through newsletters, school programs, handbooks, print and other media.
  • Participates in community activities when appropriate.
  • Focuses attention on students.
  • Utilizes data to target areas for academic or behavioral improvement.
  • Sets standards of behavior based upon the approved Code of Conduct and Discipline Philosophy.
  • Interacts with students in a variety of situations.
  • Coordinates and supervises students services.
  • Oversees accurate student cumulative information and ensures its proper use.
  • Supervises accurate student accounting and attendance records.
  • Secure class coverage when a substitute teacher is not available.
  • Welcome and direct substitute teachers new to the building.
  • Supervises and evaluates personnel.
  • Helps determine personnel needs.
  • Supervises recruitment, selection, and the orientation of personnel.
  • Completes classroom visits and observations.
  • Conducts an evaluation process with assigned personnel in the building according to district and state tenure policies, rules, procedures, and contracts.
  • Supervises the design and implementation of professional development programs.
  • Administers due process procedures when disciplining personnel.
  • Directs and schedules the activities of school professional and nonprofessional members in the performance of their duties.
  • Conducts meeting of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
  • Coordinates and supervises functions related to the business nature of the school.
  • Supervise inventories, orders, and dispersal of supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare the school's budget and monitor expenditure of funds.
  • Evaluates the condition of the building and grounds according to educational, health, safety and aesthetic standards.
  • Initiates changes in use, renovations and updating the building and grounds.
  • Works with the custodial and maintenance staffs to provide a safe, clean learning environment.
  • Responsible for the day to day operation, safety, and administration of the building and grounds.
  • Develops building plans, administers and supervises emergency preparedness and drills.
  • Coordinates District MI Access, and all building assessments.
  • Maintains awareness of current trends and research in education through self-improvement activities such as college courses, reading, in-service and professional organization participation.
  • Coordinates and supervises functions related to Southside/Special Education.
  • Responsible for the management of the IEP process.
  • Assists the Special Education Director as the liaison between Berrien RESA and related district programs.
  • Responsible for complying with rules, regulations and State/Federal reporting requirements, and updates.
  • Works cooperatively with RESA administrative and special education staff.
  • Responsible for the administration of the building discipline policy as it relates to the center-based programs.
  • Supervises the implementation and monitoring of Southside’s Positive Behavior Management Program and the After School Program.
  • Responsible for the review and update of the student and staff handbook for Southside and all SEI programs in the district.
  • Assists teachers with the IEP process.
  • Responsible for setting up visitations/orientations for new students.
  • Supervises program development and service delivery to students and staff.
  • Provides instructional leadership on curriculum development and special education instruction- and uses data to inform instructional accountability for student achievement and success in the related programs.
  • Supervises the special education data management system.
  • Facilitates staff professional development and in-service activities.
  • Performs all teacher evaluations, and assists teachers with evaluations of support staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director.
  • Evaluations:
  • Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of administrative personnel.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work collaboratively with principals to implement and monitor special education programs.
  • Ability to work in a supportive, collaborative role with staff in all departments and offices.
  • Ability to interface with other departments to coordinate reciprocal services for achieving special education goals.
  • Ability to interpret and remain current on all federal, state, and local mandates for special education and Section 504 services and to ensure that the school division is in compliance.
  • Handle confidential information discretely and professionally.
  • Use discretion and exercise sound judgment.
  • Exceptional public relations/interpersonal skills to respond to parents and advocacy groups and to serve as the school division’s lead representative/contact person of programs for special needs students.
  • Effective management, supervisory, team-building, and problem solving skills.
