Position Overview:
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for promoting the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of assigned students. The teacher provides specialized instruction, ensures compliance with state and district regulations, and supports students with diverse learning needs in achieving academic success.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree
Valid Teaching Certificate or
Eligible for a Practitioner’s License as confirmed by a local university
Valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate
Certification in area of assignment
Scope of Responsibilities:
Promote the mental, physical, emotional, and social growth of assigned students.
Performance Responsibilities / Essential Functions:
Use instructional materials and a variety of teaching techniques to support student achievement and development.
Demonstrate knowledge and application of appropriate developmental practices.
Maintain accurate records including attendance, health records, grades, report cards, and permanent folders.
Maintain a safe, organized, and attractive classroom environment.
Develop and implement effective classroom management techniques.
Complete reports, documentation, and assignments in a timely manner.
Plan and prepare lessons, submitting weekly lesson plans as required.
Report regularly and punctually to assigned duties and locations.
Notify administration of impending absences and provide adequate substitute plans.
Maintain assigned books and classroom equipment.
Utilize various assessment methods for diagnosis and placement purposes.
Provide instruction that addresses individual differences and learning needs.
Continually evaluate student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
Collaborate with school-based and central office personnel.
Maintain communication with parents regarding student progress and needs.
Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and evaluation processes.
Comply with Louisiana laws regarding education, health, safety, and student welfare.
Assist in the development and implementation of quality educational programs.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal.
Work Environment / Hours Worked:
School-based, climate-controlled environment with potential outdoor supervision subject to weather conditions.
Work schedule follows assigned school site and bargaining unit agreement.
Communication Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication systems.
Ability to communicate professionally with students, parents, and school personnel.

Physical Requirements:
