School Counselor

Position Overview:

The School Counselor provides leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success and well-being. This position implements a comprehensive school counseling program that supports students’ academic achievement, career readiness, and social/emotional development. The School Counselor aligns services with the North Carolina Comprehensive School Counseling Program and works to ensure every student is prepared for postsecondary education, the workforce, and life in the twenty-first century.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Develop and manage a comprehensive school counseling program based on state standards and school data.
• Provide individual and small group counseling services to address identified student needs.
• Assist students in developing academic, career, and personal/social goals and plans.
• Collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators to support student growth and achievement.
• Interpret and utilize student data accurately to guide counseling interventions.
• Implement referral processes and coordinate follow-up services as needed.
• Use assessment procedures appropriately to structure individual and group counseling services.
• Provide relevant information to school personnel regarding counseling program initiatives.
• Assist stakeholders in understanding student performance data and related interventions.
• Monitor student attendance, behavior, and academic performance to facilitate timely interventions.
• Collect and analyze program data to evaluate effectiveness and conduct annual program audits.
• Share results of counseling program activities with appropriate stakeholders.
• Utilize technology to enhance counseling services and program management.
• Participate in professional development to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Adhere to all applicable laws, district policies, and ethical standards of the counseling profession.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the School Administrator.

• Ability to prepare, read, and comprehend reports, records, documentation, and correspondence.
• Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to present to individuals and groups confidently.
• Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to apply logical thinking and sound judgment in decision-making.
• Ability to work effectively with students, families, and staff in sensitive or high-stress situations.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of student and personnel information.
• Ability to demonstrate professional conduct and ethical behavior at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in School Counseling.
• Current valid School Counseling license or eligibility to obtain licensure.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements:

• Occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
• Regular use of hands for computer and office equipment operation.
• Frequent sitting with occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching.
• Clear speech and hearing required for effective communication.
• Standard vision requirements.
• Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
• Work environment typically includes a moderately noisy office or school setting.
