School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing

that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement and

health of students. The school nurses facilitate positive student

responses to normal development; promote health and safety, including a healthy

environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case

management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and

family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self- advocacy, and learning

(NASN, 2010c). In order to provide quality care and manage legal risks, school

nurses should know the various national and state laws and standards that apply

to their practice. School nurses also must know their role and function

within the Columbus City School District and follow the school district’s

policies and procedures.

The mission of the Office of Health, Family and Community

Services is to promote optimal wellness among the Columbus City Schools

students and their communities by supporting their educational success and

providing leadership, education and support for the school nurses. Its

goal is to remove non-academic barriers, related to physical, psychological,

emotional and social health, in order to promote academic success.

Minimum Qualifications include:

Must meet Ohio Department of Education Pupil Support - School

Nurse qualifications. Candidates need to be a Registered Nurse (RN) and

have completed a Bachelor degree, or possess a Valid Ohio

Certificate/Licensure for Pupil Support - School Nurse - Licensure Code -
