Role and Responsibilities:

As a School Counselor at Johnston County Schools, you will lead, advocate, and collaborate to implement a comprehensive school counseling program addressing academic, career, and personal/social development for all students. You will spend the majority of your time providing direct student services while also managing program delivery and accountability.

  • Develop and maintain a written plan for the school counseling program using current school data and NC Comprehensive School Counseling Standards.
  • Communicate program goals to administrators, educators, parents, students, and community stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership in integrating the State Guidance Curriculum into school-wide initiatives.
  • Design and implement developmentally appropriate group activities to meet student needs and promote life skills for the 21st century.
  • Assist students individually or in groups with academic, career, and personal/social planning and goal-setting.
  • Interpret and utilize student data to inform planning and decision-making.
  • Provide individual and group counseling for students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Collaborate with parents, educators, and community resources to support student success and implement referrals and follow-up procedures.
  • Support teachers, parents, and stakeholders in interpreting student data and understanding program impact.
  • Participate in professional development to enhance counseling knowledge and skills.
  • Ensure compliance with laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the counseling profession.
  • Conduct annual program audits and analyze data to measure program effectiveness and guide future initiatives.
  • Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance, and facilitate interventions as needed.
  • Participate in the Johnston County Schools Medicaid Billing Program for eligible students, including Random Moment Time Studies for Medicaid-reimbursable services.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Valid school counseling certification/licensure as required by North Carolina.
  • Strong knowledge of academic, career, and personal/social development practices.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive school counseling programs based on student data and NC standards.
  • Proficiency in assessment and data analysis to guide program planning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with students, parents, staff, and community partners.
  • Knowledge of counseling ethics, laws, and educational policies.
  • Competency in using technology to support counseling services and program management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in preventive and responsive counseling strategies for K-12 students.
  • Familiarity with comprehensive school counseling program audits and accountability procedures.
  • Experience participating in Medicaid billing programs for school-based services.
