Position Overview:
The Special Education Teacher, also known as an Education Specialist, at Rocketship Public Schools is responsible for managing the IEP caseload for students who require special education services. This role focuses on improving student outcomes through targeted academic and behavioral support. Special Education Teachers work collaboratively with school teams, families, and related service providers to ensure inclusive education practices and compliance with special education regulations. The position reports to the Principal or Assistant Principal.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all students meet rigorous academic goals outlined in their IEPs, with a target growth of at least 1.5 years per academic year.
- Collaborate with school teams, families, and related service providers to improve student outcomes and plan curriculum.
- Provide one-to-one or small group instruction, direct services, and push-in or pull-out instruction as required by IEPs.
- Co-teach with general educators and related service providers to implement inclusive education practices.
- Coordinate referral and assessment procedures and facilitate IEP meetings.
- Evaluate students' academic abilities to inform intervention plans and educational programming.
- Collaborate with Psychologists and Related Service Providers to administer assessments and interpret results for initial, annual, and triennial IEPs.
- Provide accommodations and modifications in collaboration with general educators to ensure access to grade-level content.
Student and Parent Partnership:
- Instruct students to improve success in reading, writing, and math.
- Draft, write, and maintain professional, compliant IEPs; facilitate IEP meetings and ensure documentation reflects each student’s Individualized Education Program.
- Develop Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) or Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) as needed.
- Manage student behavior to maintain a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Engage families on academic and behavioral goals and share student progress transparently to ensure joint ownership of outcomes.
Rocketship Professional Culture:
- Collaborate with general educators to engage families and school communities through meetings, conferences, and professional development.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state special education laws, including IDEA (1997, 2004) and relevant state regulations.
- Partner with families to provide awareness and support for students with disabilities.
- Meet professional obligations and proactively communicate about changes or updates.
- Exhibit honest and humble self-reflection and implement constructive feedback effectively.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues and contribute to a positive staff culture.
- Collaborate with all staff to ensure consistent and well-coordinated support for students.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Preferred: Knowledge of curriculum, education codes, and special education law/policies.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary range: $72,000 – $94,272 annually, based on experience and qualifications. Additional benefits include health and wellness coverage, retirement plan, flexible spending account (FSA), paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
